Stereotypical artists are expected to be non-materialistic, sacrificing the pursuit of money for their work. Art is supposed to be beautiful, commenting only on the more sublime themes, not earthly banalities like money. Thankfully this stereotype is fading. Money, business, the economy, and self-interest are part of the building blocks of society - it is the artist's job to explore and pass comment on them. And though we idealize stereotypical artists like Van Gogh who refused to sell out, remember that even he needed money - he just tapped his brother for it all his life. Related themes:
